Counterpoint Community Orchestra (CCO) has been operating as a community orchestra in downtown Toronto for 35 years. It was the first LGBT/gay positive orchestra in Canada and in the world.
CCO is a member-run, non-audition community group consisting of strings (violin I and II, viola, cello, bass), paired flute (optional piccolo), oboe (optional English Horn), clarinet (optional bass clarinet) and bassoon, 4 horns, 2 trumpets and 2 trombones. Tuba and timpani/ other percussion are optional.
Due to the generosity of an orchestra supporter, the Counterpoint Community Orchestra is pleased to administer The Bill McQueen Music Scholarship for one double bass player for the 2019 – 2020 Season. The recipient must be enrolled in any university or college music degree program in the Greater Toronto Area, and /or in private study at the Royal Conservatory of Music.
The goal of this scholarship is to provide young musicians with orchestral experience and some financial support to develop their skills. It is dedicated to and named after Bill McQueen, a founding member of the Counterpoint Community Orchestra who worked tirelessly for the orchestra and for the rights of the LGBTQ community.
The CCO season lasts from September 2019 to June 2020. The successful candidate will be expected to attend all CCO rehearsals and performances. Rehearsals take place on Mondays 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. at 519 Church Street. The concerts are played at St. Simon’s Church 515 Bloor Street East, Toronto. Applicants must submit a CV and letter of reference from the student’s current teacher at the enrolled educational institution, an audio audition to Counterpoint Community Orchestra that is 2/3 minutes long and may be required to audition in person for the Selection Committee.
The value of the scholarship is $1200.
