SEPTEMBER 22, 2023
1. UPCOMING REHEARSALS
When: Monday September 25, 2023, 7:30pm to 9:30pm, and Mondays thereafter unless changed in the “Important CCO Dates” section, below.
Where: the ballroom at the 519 Community Centre, 519 Church Street, Toronto (except on November 6)
Required: musicians must bring their own music and music stand.
(i) BEETHOVEN SYMPHONY #3 For September 25 Rehearsal - URGENT:
If you have looked at the Sheet Music portal for the link to the Beethoven 3 parts, it’s confusing. Accordingly, our Music Director and Programme Chair have confirmed we’ll be playing the Leipzig: Breitkopf & Hartel/Kalmus edition. Direct link: https://imslp.org/wiki/Symphony_No.3,_Op.55_(Beethoven,_Ludwig_van). The second edition noted on our website.
Use your account on CCOrchestra.org, Musicians Only portal, and click on Sheet Music, find Beethoven #3 in the March programme, then:
"Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel/Kalmus edition can be accessed as follows:
1. use the link: https://imslp.org/wiki/Symphony_No.3,_Op.55_(Beethoven,_Ludwig_van)
2. scroll down a long way (past all the "Performances") until you reach "Sheet Music"
3. select the "Parts" tab
4 open the second edition: Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel/Kalmus and download your part
Although we are not performing this work until the March 23 concert, our Music Director wants to preview it so we can appreciate the symphony, and the degree of commitment it will require to be ready.
Music Links: Pdf’s for all of the music in the December concert programme are also available in the Musicians Only portal on the CCO website.
If you really cannot print your part, please contact the CCO’s Librarian, Bob Mitchell, and ask him to bring one for you: robertmitchell@rogers.com.
(ii) STRING SECTIONAL REHEARSAL October 2, 2023
The rehearsal on October 2 will be for strings only. Same place, same time. Winds and brass can enjoy a week off.
If you have suggestions for particular passages in December’s concert music that you would like guidance about, or help with, please email Gemma Donn at donn.gemma@gmail.com.
(iii) YouTube and “Twas the Night Before Christmas”
A musician made the following recommendation as an aid to how our narrated holiday story will work:
"I found this uploaded performance of ‘Twas the Night to be quite helpful for learning all the time changes and cues in Bill Holcombe’s score.
Happy to share the below Youtube link with all the CCO players:
cheers”
Our version will be even more fun than this with our narration by drag star Fay Slift.
2. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, NOV. 6, 7:00PM
The CCO is a not-for-profit, charitable corporation, and holds an Annual General Meeting every year.
The Agenda for the AGM will be circulated in advance. Likely the most important function there will be the election of the members of the Board of Directors. Only members can vote at the AGM, and only members can run to become a Director. Members are also entitled, under the By-Laws, to attend Board meetings.
Volunteers: The Board Directors is made up of between 5 and 9 members, all of whom are volunteers. There are 4 Officers: a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Treasurer, and Secretary, and up to five Members at Large.
The work of the CCO is done primarily in Committees that report to the monthly Board meetings. The By-Laws establish the following Standing Committees:
Concert and Front of House
Finance and Fundraising
Marketing and Promotion
Membership, Volunteers and Community Engagement
Nominations
Personnel and Human Resources
Programme Planning.
In addition, this year, we have a Treasurer’s Committee and a 40th Anniversary Planning Committee.
The Board does the work of the CCO and ensures the viability and continuation of our long-standing organization.
Please consider running for the Board and/or joining a Committee. There is lots of interesting work, requiring lots of different skills and differing amounts of time. There are projects that can be done from home and over time - being squeezed for time is not a barrier. If you really can’t, do you know someone you think is interested in the CCO and would be a good volunteer?
Any of the current Directors would be pleased to discuss Board positions and Volunteer opportunities with you, or the person you want to recommend. The current Board members are:
Liz Mitchell, Chairperson emitchell1727@gmail.com
Daniel Payne, Vice Chair payne.danny@gmail.com
John Todd, Treasurer jtodd@elenchus.ca
Holly Price, Secretary hol12jo@sympatico.ca
Andrew B.Q. Lam andrewbqlam@hotmail.com
David Brownstone, davidbrownstone66@gmail.com
Tetsuya Kobayashi, tty103g@gmail.com
Bob Bentley, richardsbentley@rogers.com
3. APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP
Thanks to everyone who has completed their membership forms and fee payments.
If you have not already done so, to join or renew, please complete an application for membership and a Media Consent form (both attached) and pay fees.
Other things you need to know:
(i) Potential new musician members can attend two trial rehearsals; fees become due and payable at the beginning of the third rehearsal attended, and you will be asked about your fee payment.
(ii) Membership fees: $120 before the December concert (for the full year of 3 concerts), $80 between January and the March concert (2 concerts), and $40 from March 24 to the June concert (1 concert). Students pay one half of this amount. Financial hardship should never interfere with being welcomed into the CCO community - please email or speak to the Chair who, in the appropriate circumstances, can reduce or waive fee payments: emitchell1727@gmail.com
(iii) Paying fees - first choice: pay your fees by e-transfer to treasurer@ccorchestra.org, Please include a note with your e-transfer saying “Membership fees for _______________(your name)”. Fees can also be paid by cheque or cash to the Door Volunteer or to any Director you see at the rehearsals.
(iv) COVID - The CCO’s Vaccination Policy and its COVID Safety Policy are currently in abeyance. For now, the Door Volunteers will not check vaccination status and face masks are strongly recommended, not required. The Door Volunteers have masks available at rehearsals. COVID is expected to make a resurgence this fall. Musicians and volunteers are expected to self-monitor and not attend rehearsals if they are ill or have symptoms.
4. FIRST POSTER DISTRIBUTION
One way to advertise the CCO is the old-fashioned way: posting CCO posters around your neighbourhood coffee shops and notice boards, and circulating them to your friends, families and contacts by email.
The first of the four CCO’s posters for this season will be ready for musicians to pick-up on Monday, September 25. This is the general “who we are” poster, inviting readers to get involved with the CCO as musicians, volunteers, and/or donors. No need to wait for the hard copy though - please start distributing this general poster describing the CCO by email as soon as you can.
