Below are the performance notes shared in the soloist’s part.
First, however, are two notes the conductor may wish to
share with the entire orchestra (or at least the strings):
String Harmonics: Numerous ways of notating harmonics exist; in this work, the desired harmonic pitch is indicated
as a regular-size note with the usual “harmonic sign” above it. For common harmonics, this is the only
indication given. For those which the players may encounter less often, the fingering is indicated below the
desired harmonic note (at least upon first reference in the part) by a pair of parenthetical cue-size notes. The solid notehead indicates the string upon which the harmonic is found; the open, diamond-shaped notehead indicates which note should be lightly touched to achieve the desired harmonic.
Cross Rhythms in Time: While the time signature is most commonly a compound triple meter, it is of course at times an imperfect, irregular meter, such as 2+2+2+3. Such is the case at times in this work. Were this pattern to occur homorhythmically, a simple time signature would suffice just fine. However, in mvt. 3, there are cross rhythms in various string parts. The top of the time signature is therefore indicated as 2+2+2+3, to call attention to these cross-rhythms. When they occur in m. 11 (viola), m. 26 (viola and second violin) and m. 69 (all shoulder-held
strings), the bowings should not be modified to fit the time signature, and the conducting should stay in four to
accentuate the 2+2+2+3 subdivision. SOLOIST NOTES
Mallets: Throughout the work, indications are given to use specific mallets manufactured by Malmark, who commissioned the work. These are simply suggestions to help indicate the tonal color desired. Performers should
feel free to substitute mallets at their discretion, taking into account the acoustics of the performance venue, balance of orchestral forces, any amplification used, etc. Consultation with the conductor is advised. Damping: As with mallets, it is difficult to predict the amount of decay which will occur in playing handbell keyboards in
various venues and with different mallets. To attempt to do so would be an exercise in micromanagement (and
likely with little reward, due to the vast variables). However, in some cases, the traditional “damp sign” is
used. Its interpretation should be as follows:
