Less than 2 weeks until the start of the CCO 2024-2025 season on September 9! Welcome back to our returning members and a hearty welcome to those who will be joining us for the first time.
Please note our new logo - designed for the CCO’s 40th Anniversary celebrations last June but so cool and inclusive that we are continuing to use it.
Thank you to Daniel Payne for organizing this summer’s "CCO & Friends" concerts in Allan Gardens. Also, thanks to the featured performers, Joana with her students, Gemma and her string trio, and Kevin and Caroline with Windwerx, and to the CCO members who showed up to perform with them. The picnic on Aug. 11 inside the Conservatory was a nice time to say hello to one another and greet our audience members. The representatives of Friends of Allan Gardens, as usual, were very enthusiastic and thankful for the CCO’s contribution to this park. .
I. FIRST REHEARSAL & BRINGING YOUR MUSIC
When: Monday September 9, 2024, 7:30pm
Where: The 519 Community Centre, 519 Church Street
Music: Musicians are required to bring their own music and a music stand to all rehearsals. If you have not already done so, please go on the website, CCOrhcestr.org, Musicians Only, and follow the steps to open an account. You will find, under Sheet Music, the concert programmes and the links to most of the music for the December concert. The page will look like this:
Music Director, Andrew Chung, asks that everyone have a look at L'Arlésienne Suite No.2 (Bizet, Georges), and at Polar Express before the rehearsal if possible.
The December programme has changed with respect to the Kye Marshall work; at the composer’s suggestion, we will be performing her “Why Not Blues”, instead of her overture, as the composer thought it would be more suitable for a holiday concert. Ms Marshall’s copyist is preparing parts now and they will be posted on the Sheet Music page or distributed by our Librarian when they are available.
If you have difficulty opening an account on the website, contact Director Tetsuya Kobayashi at tty103g@gmail.com or Concertmaster Gemma Donn at donn.gemma@gmail.com. If for some reason you cannot print the music, please contact the CCO Librarian Bob Mitchell at robgormit@gmail.com with a request that he bring a copy for you to the rehearsal.
II. NEW APPLICATION FORMS
The CCO allows musicians to try out the orchestra for 2 rehearsals before deciding whether or not they wish to join.
There is a Door Volunteer at every rehearsal. Please identify yourself to the Door Volunteer when you arrive - they keep attendance both for CCO purposes and at the request of the Community Centre that gives us our rehearsal space for free. You will be given a Welcome Package to take home. If you decide to join, you need to sign and return certain forms, and pay fees, all as explained in the Welcome Package, that is:
sign an Application for Membership form
sign a Media Consent form
sign the Acknowledgment that you have read the Policy for Respectful CCO Spaces
pay, or make arrangements to pay, membership fees.
III. TWO FUN THINGS
(i) AN INVITATION TO THE ROM ON OCTOBER 15, 7:00pm:
The CCO’s prinicpal bassoonist and the Treasurer on the CCO’s Board of Directors, Kevin Seymour, is also the curator of “Wild Cats”, a special exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum that has been running all summer and ends October 20.
Kevin is extending an invitation to CCO members and friends to tour the exhibit - with him! He’s chosen Tuesday October 15, 7:00pm for the tour. Kevin made that choice because on the third Tuesday of every month the ROM waives its usual general admission fee. Kevin’s guests will only have to pay the $13 entrance fee required for this special exhibit.
Kevin will meet our group under the totem poles at the staircase at 7:00pm on October 15.
Are you interested in attending?
Kevin needs to know the numbers he’ll be hosting so please RSVP directly to Kevin at kevin.seymour@sympatico.ca.
And thanks very much to Kevin for this invitation!
(ii) OutTV’s CCO COVERAGE LAST JUNE
Those musicians who were playing with the CCO last spring may remember Andre Fast, a videographer who did a story about the CCO, and its anniversary concert, for OutTV. It aired on July 8. For those of you who missed it, here it is. For our members who agreed to be interviewed - thank you for participating and getting the CCO this great coverage.
IV. MORE CONCERT SHIRTS?
The black golf shirts with a CCO crest on them that we designed and ordered for the 40th Anniversary Concert last June are quite popular. Some people have asked if they can still order them. The short answer is “no” but the longer answer is that, for the first three weeks of rehearsals. the Door Volunteers will have a list to sign if you would like to order one - $25.00, payable on delivery, unless the supplier increases the price. Once we know how many shirts we want to order, we’ll contact the supplier and let you know..
