CCO ANNOUNCEMENTS FEBRUARY 8, 2025

Lee-Ann

I. REHEARSAL FEBRUARY 10, 2025

For this Monday, Andrew Chung has asked us to rehearse our Preposterous work by Knowles, the first and fourth movements of the Brahms, and the oboe concerto.

Snacks: viola, cello, bass. Next week: winds, brass and piano.

II. THE LOGO PROJECT

The CCO logo at the top of this page was created for us in 2024 as a temporary measure while we worked on a new logo for the orchestra, along with a refreshed media presence that would follow the logo.

This project is being headed up by Tai Chan (flute) Em Kessler (bassoon), and volunteer Lee-Ann Ngu. It’s a long project, involving surveys, market research, choices. history, goals, design - you name it. You can expect to hear from the Logo Committee in due course, and if you have ideas that you like you could send them along to these volunteers.

III. NOTES ON THE MARCH 22 CONCERT

Please remember that we are no longer performing the Selections from Callirhoe Suite at our March 22 concert. The CCO website will be up-dated soon.

Our March 22 concert has been named “Strange & Preposterous”, after the first work we are performing. A Strange and Preposterous Affair, by Canadian composer Kathryn Knowles. You can find the Parts, then your own instrument, on the following Google Drive file, which also contains an audio file https://drive.google.com/drive/mobile/folders/1FwMSLn05RLPhPuFuUjmTGX-h68k0OOiZ?usp=sharing

A Strange and Preposterous Affair was composed for the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, and premiered last season. There is quite a lot of background to both the composer and the work on the HPO website, Knowles’ website, and on Youtube. Knowles explains, in text and in poetry, that it is a work composed to reflect times of personal change, confusion, and eventual transformation; on-line programme notes describe the work as follows:

"Centred in two contrasting keys, the music presents a struggle between two different themes and ideas…….This struggle continues until the triumphant revelation of both themes together at the end: change is not about becoming something new at the expense of what came before; it is about the moment where the past and the future meet and begin to blend. Change is absurd and uncomfortable. It can be unexpected and overwhelming, but it can also be exciting, fulfilling, and ultimately so worthwhile.

Following this work, we are delighted to be featuring our principal oboe, Beth Brown, in Concentus Brevis for Oboe and String Orchestra by Mathilde Capuis‬. As noted in an earlier Announcements. Capuis was an Italian composer, teacher and musician who lived from 1913 to 2017 - dying at 104! She composed this work in 1975. Recordings of this lovely work are available on Youtube.

CCO Librarian, Bob Mitchell, has already distributed copies of the oboe concerto; should you need a copy, please contact Bob directly at robgormit@gmail.com.

Following intermission, we will perform Symphony No. 1 by Johannes Brahms (German, 1833-1897). This work includes passages and rhythms that are the composer’s conscious homage to works by Beethoven; it premiered in 1876.

Fundraising at the Concert:  The 50/50 raffle and the Cookie Donation Jars have turned out to be pretty easy ways to raise a few funds for the orchestra. We expect to do those again at the March 22 concert. Please start thinking about cookie recipes - our audience members appreciate it.

Concert Volunteers:  If you know anyone eager to be a concert volunteer, please forward the name to emitchell1727@gmail.com.
