CCO ANNOUNCEMENTS MAY 11 2023

MAY 11, 2023 Less than a month until our almost final concert for the CCO’s 2022-23 Season. But our “summer season” will follow immediately after. Details for both are here. I. REHEARSAL MAY 15, 2023 Rehearsal May 15, 7:30pm, St. Barnabas Church (Chester subway). Musicians are expected to bring their own music - available on the Musicians’ portal on CCOrchestra.org or by asking our Librarian, Bob Mitchell, to bring a part for you, using robertmitchell@rogers.com. The IMSLP link to Dvorak’s New World Symphony is https://imslp.org/wiki/Symphony_No.9%2C_Op.95_(Dvo%C5%99%C3%A1k%2C_Anton%C3%ADn) The music for Elizabeth Raum’s new piece, Kupala Nights, is available in full in the Announcements dated March 23, as well as on the CCO website, Musicians’ Only portal, or by asking Bob Mitchell to bring your part. II. JUNE 10 CONCERT Name: New World, New Music, Inspiration from Tradition Where & When: The Church of St. Peter and St. Simon the Apostle, 525 Bloor East, 7:30pm. Masks are strongly recommended. Tickets: $20 for adults, $12 for Youth (18 and under). Available from Helen Li at rehearsals, and electronically on the CCO website. Also at the Church on June 10. Posters: Available from the Door Volunteer at the Rehearsals. Tickets: Available at the May rehearsals. All musicians are expected to sell at least 2 tickets. Here is our poster for your use. This can be easily inserted into an email to all your friends and family. Please post it wherever you can. III. PLAYING IN THE PARK & CONCERT IN THE PARK Counterpoint has made two large commitments to bringing the joy of music to Allan Gardens Park this summer. The orchestra needs as much support as can be mustered from our musicians. (i) PLAYING IN THE PARK - Sunday Afternoons The CCO has committed to playing its third season of Sunday afternoon concerts in Allan Gardens. This series in envisioned as an opportunity to: give back to the community

  • help build CCO audiences

  • promote the CCO’s mandate

  • attract new players and community members.

Where: Allan Gardens, on Jarvis south of Carlton, in the shade beside the children’s play area When: Sunday’s, 2:00pm, starting July 9 and running consecutively for 6 Sunday’s until August 13, 2023, with a picnic on the last day What: A one hour rehearsal, sight reading session, followed by a mini one hour concert, “Counterpoint and Friends". Who: All musicians. The concert normally features a small ensemble, as well as having the larger group playing the music just rehearsed or other familiar music. Everyone is welcome to come when they can. No need to commit to all 6 concerts. However, the programme committee (Daniel, Andrew, and Gemma) should know what instruments are attending so that appropriate music can be chosen. Please come spontaneously if you can’t plan ahead, and be prepared to “wing it” with music, for instance, a clarinet playing with the violins. The point is to have fun making music together. Here is the sign-up form to complete and submit: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1hmcJmVcUvlnX5aGaRCXKMAcDmAzEYiY7YKdJ9aM8Ugs/edit#settings (It may open on “Settings” - just go to “Questions at the top of the form.) (ii) THURSDAY EVENING CONCERT IN ALLAN GARDENS We are pleased to announce that Toronto Metropolitan University has selected Counterpoint to perform a concert on a Thursday evening in Allan Gardens this summer. The date and time are not yet known, but we are excited about this opportunity. TMU is paying the CCO an honorarium for this concert. Toronto Metropolitan University School of Social Innovation has a multi-year project underway, aiming to make Allan Gardens Park the community hub it used to be. One new project is TMU’s plan to hold concerts in Allan Gardens on 6 Thursday evenings this summer. The School recently received confirmation that it had the support of the Toronto Arts Council, and we received an offer of one concert immediately thereafter. TMU is hoping a successful concert series will lead one day to the building of a permanent stage in the Park. In the meantime, TMU will be erecting a canopy to act as a temporary stage This exciting opportunity came to the CCO because TMU’s project lead organizer saw and heard the CCO during a Playing in the Park afternoon last summer. She admired our commitment to the neighborhood and has enthusiastically included us in her planning since then. IV. PLANNING THE CCO’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY All members are welcome to attend and participate in the next meeting of the 40th Anniversary Planning Committee. You can share ideas, commit to a particular project, or just hear what’s going on so far. Here’s the Zoom link: Time: May 23, 2023 07:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81647334678 Meeting ID: 816 4733 4678 The Co-Chairs, Trish Tervit and David Brownstone, provided a summary of the ideas generated at the May 2 members’ meeting in the last edition of the Announcements, dated May 4, 2023, now available through the Musicians Only portal at CCOrchestra.org. Although the Anniversary Concert is not until June of 2024, there is lots to do before then, including fundraising, applying for grants, collecting history and figuring out how to communicate it, advertising and promotion, community outreach, etc. If you would like to become a volunteer, please speak with David at the rehearsals, or email Trish at trishtervit12@gmail.com or David at davidbrownstone66@gmail.com or attend the upcoming meeting and announce your interest - everyone will be delighted to have another person joining in the prep and planning work. V. CONFIRMING OUR RETURN TO THE 519 The 519 has now confirmed that Counterpoint Community Orchestra can return to rehearsing in the ballroom of its traditional home, The 519 Community Centre. We’ll start at 7:30pm Monday’s and play until 9:25pm so that we can leave promptly at 9:30pm each week. (The 519 normally closes at 9:00pm and has given us a half hour extra on the understanding that we will not hold )its staff beyond 9:30.) We are very grateful that The 519 is once again giving us rehearsal space at no charge. St. Barnabas has been a generous host to us this past year, and we are very thankful that that location has worked out so well.
