Writer's picture: Tetsuya KTetsuya K

OCTOBER 4, 2024

I. APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP NOW DUE

As set out in the last Announcements, it is time to join if you have attended two free rehearsals. Wonderful to see so many returning members! And a warm welcome to the new musician members! New violinists continue to be particularly invited to join us - please tell your musical friends. And non-playing members are most welcome.

Fees: $120 for the year - $60 for students. Fees are pro-rated; if you know you can only do the holiday concert, for example, you need only pay $40 now, although you will have to pay again in January if your plans change. Contact emitchell1727@gmail.com confidentially if you cannot pay your full fees because of financial hardship.

Fee Payment: e-transfer your fees to treasurer@ccorchestra.org. or pay with cash or cheque at a rehearsal to the Door Volunteer or any Director.

Forms Required: please sign and return the application form, media consent form, and Appendix B of the Policy for Respectful CCO Spaces. The Policy is on the CCO website - CCOrchestra.org - in the “About Us” portal. Here it is as a Word document:

,

Appendix A of the Policy tells you that Dr. Russell Westkirk (cello) is the Respect and Safety Officer (rwestkirk@gmail); Appendix B is the Acknowledgment that you have read and understood the Policy. If you cannot access the Policy electronically, or cannot print Appendix B, a Door Volunteer can give you a copy of the Policy to take home to read, and return the Appendix B at the next rehearsal.

Membership & Volunteer Committee: Jeff Buchyns (trombone) is Chair of the new Membership & Volunteer Committee. Please direct any questions about membership to Jeff at jeff_buchyns@hotmail.com

II. UPCOMING REHEARSAL AND HANDBELL RECORDING

Thank you to our Concertmaster, Gemma Donn, for a productive string sectional last week. Regular rehearsals resume this Monday, October 7. (Snacks: winds, brass, piano.)

Music Director Andrew Chung requests that musicians rehearse in advance of Monday:

  • Bizet

  • Polar Express

  • handbell Concerto - after the break.

A reminder to new members to bring your own music and stand; the music is available on the CCO website, CCOrchestra.org, Members Only portal, Sheet Music.

You can hear the handbell concerto by following the links on the Musicians Only portal or using these links:

III. ROM TOUR OCTOBER 15, 7:00pm

Kevin Seymour’s guided tour of the Wild Cats exhibit he curated at the Royal Ontario Museum is filled: Tuesday October 15, 7:00pm. Meet Kevin under the totem poles just inside the University Avenue entrance. More details to follow from Kevin closer to the event. If you have missed out, try speaking to Kevin - kevin.seymour@sympatico.ca

IV.  BECOMING A DIRECTOR & TWO VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY REQUIRED

Please consider being a Director: An election will be held at the Annual General Meeting on November 18.

Our By-Laws require 5 to 9 Directors, 3 of whom must self-describe as members of the 2SLBGTQIA+ community. Directors must be members of the CCO. They stand for election to a 2 year term to a maximum of 3 terms. The elected Directors elect the CCO’s Officers, ie, the Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary.  Directors meet monthly, usually by Zoom, for about 2 hours. Different Directors assume responsibility as well for the Committees or projects in which they have an interest.

Some of the current Directors will not be seeking re-election. There is room for you - or for someone you know. Non-musicians are very welcome! Can you join the Board or have a friend or family member who you think would be good?  If you have questions or want to express an interest, please speak to any of the current Directors:

Chair: Liz Mitchell, emitchell1727@gmail.com

Vice Chair: Daniel Payne, payne.danny@gmail.com

Treasurer: Kevin Seymour, kevin.seymour@sympatico.ca

Secretary: Russell Westkirk, rwestkirk@gmail.com

Directors: David Brownstone, davidbrownstone66@gmail.com

Tetsuya Kobayashi, tty103g@gmail.com

Andrew B. Q. Lam, andrewbqlam@hotmail.com

We always appreciate volunteers for the many tasks required to host three concerts a season, plus other activities. Right now, however, we have two urgent requests:

(i) Driver - a double bass musician is interested in playing with the CCO, but can’t manage his double bass on the TTC. Can you pick up and drop off a musician and his instrument at U of T on Harbord for rehearsals, and concerts? Email emitchell1727@gmail.com

(ii) Business Ads in the concert programme - businesses are often enthusiastic about buying an ad in the CCO concert programme, and we are, of course, enthusiastic about the revenue this generates. Running such ads also gives us an opportunity to advertise the CCO’s existence and programmes to local businesses, and to demonstrate to our audiences the CCO’s involvement in local neighbourhoods. Interested in spearheading this initiative? Email emitchell1727@gmail.com
